How to use AI for studying without cheating (and actually remember more)

Use AI as a tutor, not a ghostwriter. Practice quizzes, flashcards and explanations from your own notes, with prompts that make you do the thinking.

The fastest way to learn with AI is to make it ask you questions, not answer them for you. Research on learning has long shown that testing yourself (retrieval practice) beats re-reading. AI makes that testing effortless.

Step 1: Feed it your course, not the internet

Upload your lecture slides, notes and readings to Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) (or a chat assistant that accepts files). Answers grounded in your own material match what your exam will actually cover.

Step 2: Make it quiz you

Tutor mode

You are my tutor for [subject]. Use only the sources I’ve uploaded. Ask me one question at a time about [topic], starting easy and getting harder. Wait for my answer. Then tell me what I got right, what I missed, and where in the sources the answer is. Don’t give me the answer before I’ve tried.

The “don’t give me the answer” line is what turns a chatbot into a tutor.

Step 3: Explain it back

When something doesn’t click, ask for a simpler explanation, then explain it back in your own words and ask the AI to find the gaps:

“Here is my explanation of photosynthesis. What did I get wrong or leave out?”

Step 4: Turn mistakes into flashcards

At the end of a session, ask: “Make 10 flashcards from the questions I got wrong today.” Review them tomorrow.

Bottom line

Upload your own notes, make the AI quiz you one question at a time, and turn every mistake into a flashcard. You will spend less time re-reading and remember more on exam day.

Questions people ask

Is using AI to study considered cheating?

Using AI to quiz yourself or explain a topic is generally treated like using a tutor. Submitting AI-written work as your own usually is cheating. Rules vary, so check your school's policy.

Why use Gemini Notebook instead of a general chatbot?

Gemini Notebook answers from the sources you upload, such as your lecture notes and readings, and shows where each answer came from. That keeps your revision tied to what your course actually covers.
