What it is
GPT-6 Astra is the most capable and most expensive model in OpenAI’s GPT-6 family. OpenAI’s API changelog lists it from September 3, 2026, with a context window of about 1.05 million tokens.
What it costs
$10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens in the API. That is five times the price of GPT-6.1 Sol, which came out later in September.
What it means for you
Save Astra for the hardest jobs, such as long research or multi-step coding work. For everyday writing and summaries, GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Luna will do the job for a fraction of the cost.
Use cases this model is good for
How to automate a boring computer task with an AI-written script (no coding experience needed)
You do the same file-renaming or copy-paste job every week and suspect a small script could do it for you.
How to summarize a long PDF or contract with AI (without missing the important parts)
You have a 60-page report or contract and need the key points, numbers and risks today, without reading every page.
