What it is
Terra is OpenAI’s efficient tier, a step below Sol. GPT-6.1 Terra arrived on October 26, 2026. OpenAI pitches it as fast and good at two things: understanding what is on a screen (screenshots, charts, documents) and operating a computer for you, clicking and typing through apps. OpenAI also says its writing is clearer and more natural than the previous Terra.
What it costs
$1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens in the API. OpenAI says that is 50% less than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
In ChatGPT, it is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users inside ChatGPT Work and Codex, not in the regular chat window.
What it means for you
If you build automations that run thousands of times a day, or want an agent to click through web forms for you, Terra is the cheaper choice to try first. For hard reasoning or long writing, GPT-6.1 Sol is still OpenAI’s stronger model.
