ChatGPT used to be simple: free or $20. Now there are four plans, and Pro alone comes in three sizes. Here’s what each one actually adds, in plain words, so you only pay for what you’ll use.
Quick answer: most people should use Free or Plus. Pick Go if the free limits annoy you but $20 feels like too much. Pick Pro only if you use ChatGPT for hard reasoning work all day.
The four plans side by side
| Free | Go | Plus | Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price (US) | $0 | $8/mo | $20/mo | From $100/mo ($100, $200 or $500) |
| GPT-6 text chats | Unlimited | Unlimited, higher limits on features | Plus advanced reasoning models | Pro reasoning with GPT-6 Astra |
| Deep research | Limited | More | Expanded | Maximum |
| Memory and context | Limited | Longer | Expanded | Maximum |
| Projects, tasks, custom GPTs | Not listed | Yes | Yes | Expanded |
| GPT-6.1 Terra in ChatGPT Work and Codex | No | No | Yes | Yes |
From OpenAI’s pricing and help pages, checked October 28, 2026. All paid plans are billed monthly, with no yearly discount.
Free: better than it used to be
The free plan now includes unlimited text chats with GPT-6. You get limited deep research and limited memory, but for questions, explanations and quick writing help, many people never need to upgrade.
Go ($8): the budget upgrade
Go is for people who keep hitting free limits. It adds higher usage limits, more image generation, more file uploads and longer memory, plus projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs. OpenAI says it may start testing ads in Go, something to know if ads bother you.
Best for: students and light daily users.
Plus ($20): the one most people should buy
Plus adds GPT-6’s advanced reasoning models, much more deep research, and more memory. Paid plans also get GPT-6.1 Terra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, OpenAI’s new model for operating a computer and reading screens.
Best for: anyone who uses ChatGPT most days for work or study. Read our ChatGPT review for the details.
Pro ($100 and up): for heavy reasoning work
Pro adds Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI’s most capable model, plus the highest limits on deep research, memory and tools. It comes in $100, $200 and $500 tiers.
Best for: researchers, analysts and developers who run long, hard tasks every day. If you’re not sure you need it, you don’t.
How ChatGPT compares on price
| Main paid plan | Price |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus | $20/mo |
| Claude Pro | $20/mo, or $17/mo yearly |
| Google AI Pro (Gemini) | $19.99/mo |
At the main tier, all three cost about the same. The difference is what you get for it: see our Claude review and Gemini review.
Bottom line
Start free. Move to Go if limits get in your way, and to Plus once ChatGPT becomes part of your daily work. Leave Pro to the people who can name exactly what GPT-6 Astra’s extra reasoning saves them. Not sure which GPT-6 model is which? Read GPT-6 models explained.
