Engineering coursework is a mix of heavy maths, code, lab data and long technical readings. General chatbots help with some of it, but the best results come from matching the tool to the job. Here’s the kit we’d put together for an engineering student in 2026.
Quick answer: Wolfram|Alpha for maths, GitHub Copilot (free for verified students) for code, ChatGPT for explanations, and Gemini Notebook for your lecture notes.
The engineering student’s AI kit
| Job | Tool | Free option | Why this one |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maths, calculus, physics | Wolfram Alpha | Yes; Pro from $5/mo (yearly) | Computes exact answers; student plans show steps |
| Programming | GitHub Copilot | Free for verified students | Works inside your code editor |
| Explanations and problem-solving | ChatGPT | Yes, unlimited GPT-6 text chats | Explains concepts several ways |
| Lecture notes and readings | Gemini Notebook | Yes | Answers only from your files, with citations |
| Papers and literature | Perplexity | Yes | Searches first and links sources |
| Lab data and charts | Julius AI | Limited; Plus $20/mo ($16 yearly) | Analyses spreadsheets with code you can check |
| Diagrams for reports | Napkin AI | Yes; paid from $9/mo | Turns text into flowcharts and diagrams |
Prices from each tool’s own pages, checked October 28, 2026.
Maths: Wolfram|Alpha, not a chatbot
Chatbots are much better at maths than they used to be, but they still predict text. Wolfram|Alpha computes. For integrals, differential equations, unit conversions and matrix work, it’s the safer choice. The free version gives answers. Wolfram’s student plans add step-by-step solutions, which is the part that helps you learn and catch where your own working went wrong. Check the plan before you pay: the cheapest Pro option doesn’t include them.
A good habit: solve the problem yourself, then check each step against Wolfram|Alpha.
Code: GitHub Copilot is free for students
If you write Python, C, MATLAB-style scripts or embedded code, GitHub Copilot suggests code inside your editor. Through GitHub Education, verified students get Copilot, a free GitHub Pro account and the Student Developer Pack. Verify your student status with your university email or ID.
Use it to speed up boilerplate and to explain unfamiliar code, but make sure you can explain every line you submit. Our guide to automating a boring task with an AI-written script shows a safe way to work.
Concepts: ChatGPT as a patient tutor
When a topic won’t click, thermodynamics, control systems, signal processing, ask ChatGPT to explain it three ways: with an analogy, with the maths, and with a worked example. Then explain it back and ask what you got wrong. The free plan covers this.
Notes and readings: Gemini Notebook
Upload lecture slides, textbook chapters and past papers. Gemini Notebook answers only from those files and shows which page each answer came from. Ask it to make practice questions from the topics your lecturer stressed.
Lab data: Julius AI
For lab reports, Julius AI takes your spreadsheet, runs the analysis with code you can inspect, and makes charts. Check the formulas it used, and keep the raw data. Julius is 18+.
Reports: Perplexity and Napkin AI
- Perplexity finds papers and standards with links. Open every source before citing it.
- Napkin AI turns a process description into a clean flowchart or block diagram for your report.
Bottom line
Use Wolfram|Alpha for anything mathematical, claim your free GitHub Copilot as a verified student, and keep ChatGPT and Gemini Notebook open for explanations and revision. That covers most of an engineering degree for little or no money. For a broader list, see the best AI tools for students.
